Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of frequently asked questions regarding Chiropractic treatment at the Chichester Chiropractic Health Centre.

What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a method of spinal adjustments which aim to encourage alignment of the spine.   The philosophy used by Chiropractors looks at the principal that better spinal alignment leads to an improvement in health, flexibility, performance and a reduction in pain.  Every day thousands of people visit Chiropractors as a way to stay healthy, increase flexibility and improve posture for a better life and sports performance.

What is a Chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractors use adjustments where specific forces are applied in a precise direction to a fixated or dysfunctional joint to help encourage better alignment and motion of that joint. Chiropractic adjustments are gentle, painless and the best way to maintain your spinal health.   Chiropractors don’t just look for spinal misalignment;  we also check and adjust the pelvis, shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles and much more.

How do you adjust the spine?
At Chichester Chiropractic clinic we use a very gentle technique called Koren Specific Technique.   With this technique there is no cracking, popping, crunching or twisting, we simply perform gentle and directed adjustments to help realign the joint, encourage motion and reduce pressure on the nerve..

What is wellness care?
Wellness care is Chiropractic treatment to help align your spine to improve your performance, flexibility, concentration and help you feel great.   Instead of concentrating on removing pain or restriction, we focus on increasing the efficiency of your nervous system by removing any subluxations (interferences) in your spine.

How does Chiropractic work?
The nervous system is the main controller of your body.  It gives you sensation, movement and control over all your bodily functions.   If there is any break down in communication between your brain and any part of your body, this can cause dysfunction for the affected area.   This dysfunction can present in many ways such as back pain, leg numbness, pins & needles, headaches, muscle weakness and loss of skin sensation.   Chiropractors look to use specific adjustments to correct any breakdowns in your nervous system, thus leading to better communication and less pain and improved muscle strength.

What education and training do Chiropractors receive?
Chiropractors have to complete a 5 year Integrated Masters in Chiropractic (MChiro).   Over the course of this degree they study human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry neuroscience, pharmacology, pathology, behavioural science, musculoskeletal medicine, biomechanics, imaging & referral, clinical neurology, general medicine, differential diagnosis, patient assessment and philosophy.   Over the 5 years, Chiropractors develop their practical skills working on patient assessment, physical screening and safe effective adjustments.   Once qualified the learning doesn’t stop, the General Chiropractic Council stipulate Chiropractors must complete 30 hours of CPD (continuing professional development) which includes further training courses, research and many other learning activities.

Is Chiropractic safe?
Yes.   Your Chiropractor has completed over 5 years training and uses the most gentle and safest adjustments to correct any misalignments.   Unlike other Chiropractors, we do not perform rotational neck adjustments.

Are all patients adjusted in the same way?
No.   We view every client on an individual basis and formulate treatment plans to suit.   Some visits there may only be one or two areas which require adjustments, however sometimes the entire spine and other parts of the body may require attention.

Can I adjust myself?
No.   Self adjusting can be dangerous.   So that you can help yourself and speed up recovery your Chiropractor might recommend a selection of exercises, stretches and lifestyle changes.

Can I visit a Chiropractor if I am pregnant?
Around 80% of women will experience back pain during pregnancy with 25% also experiencing SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction).   Chiropractic adjustments can help make pregnancy more comfortable by reducing pain and lessen feelings of nausea, headaches and fatigue.   Please read our pregnancy section.
