Hypnotherapy is simply a means of achieving a state of deep relaxation, which in turn allows the unconscious mind to be highly receptive to positive influences and suggestions. It is a very effective way to remove unwanted fears or phobias, create lasting change or combine with a professional sports coaching programme to improve sports performance.
During a Hypnotherapy session any mental blocks – conscious or unconscious – are safely explored and removed with the assistance of a trained hypnotherapist. It is totally pain free and often reported to be incredibly relaxing, leaving you feeling at the end of a session as if you have just woken from a deep sleep.
What can Hypnotherapy help with?
We specialise in helping people with fears and phobias, as well as improving or restoring sports performance – although hypnotherapy has an incredibly far reaching potential. Common examples of what people would visit a hypnotherapist for are:
- Fears & Phobias
- Sports Performance
- Public Speaking/Presentation
- Self Confidence
- Stopping Smoking
How does Hypnotherapy work?
Hypnotherapy is, as the word suggests, a therapy that utilises hypnosis to bring about changes to an individual. The state of hypnosis within a therapy setting is purely for therapeutic purposes and isn’t to be confused with stage hypnosis, which is intended more for entertainment.
Hypnosis is achieved by firstly finding a comfortable seated position and with the guide of the therapist slowly drawing the attention inwards until external distractions are almost unnoticeable. From here, the subconscious mind becomes very receptive to suggestions, although you are still aware of everything that is happening around you. Specific issues can then be worked through as discussed with the hypnotherapist at the beginning of the session.
During hypnosis you remain aware of what is being said although you will be very relaxed. It is unusual for someone to actually fall asleep during a hypnosis and although you may feel like you have had a sleep you will remember what you heard.
How will I know if Hypnotherapy is right for me?
If you have tried to make changes in your life, overcome a fear or phobia or are suffering from a mental block then Hypnotherapy can help. Being in a state of hypnosis allows you to really focus in on your issue or challenge, it means that you can get straight to the heart of the issue in an efficient and comfortable manner and then transform the blockage, allowing you to live with more confidence and security.
In addition to an initial session, additional sessions can help further cement the change you are seeking until it becomes automatic and is as natural to you as breathing is.
Do I need Hypnotherapy?
As with all complementary healthcare, Hypnotherapy is intended to support a healthy and balanced lifestyle and as such shouldn’t be depended upon to solve all of your problems. Regular sessions can, however assist in the formation of new, healthy and positive habits.
Ultimately, any change that you experience happens within you, and hypnotherapy is a fantastic way of being able to kickstart your changes to help you gain a renewed sense of purpose and direction as well as making progress in life far more quickly once mental blocks and obstacles are removed.
What does it feel like to be hypnotised?
Hypnosis is a state of relaxation; you are not asleep. People tend to have different feelings during hypnotic inductions but you will be aware of what is being said and you will have full control. The hypnotherapy we use is completely different to the stage hypnosis you may have seen. We will never make any suggestion that you should do anything out of character and even if we did, your conscious mind would take over and you would come out of the hypnotic state straight away.
Some people describe a heaviness in their limbs, breathing tends to slow down as you relax, possibly tingling in the fingers. Most people find it to be a very relaxing and comfortable experience.
A typical hypnotherapy session lasts approximately 60 minutes where you will be asked questions about the specific issue or problem you’d like to work on. Once the hypnotherapist has enough information on the nature of your issue they will guide you gently into a hypnotic state (also known as hypnotic induction) where you will then have positive suggestions and affirmations spoken to you to remove or reframe the issue, allowing you to carry on with day to day life with a renewed sense of freedom and confidence.
Follow up consultations - as required – are intended to strengthen and continue the process of change as well as providing you with tools and techniques (where applicable) to help you further the benefit of your sessions in your own time.
